As a natural light photographer who specializes in weddings, I don’t own a studio. So every winter when it’s too cold to go outside for photoshoots, what do I do, stop shooting? No of course! There are plenty Indoor Photography Locations in Columbus Ohio that are beautiful for any photo shoot that you will be surprised when you read this post:) I wanted to put these locations together for a long time and I hope that it will be helpful to any photographer, or client who wants/needs photos during cold, winter time in Ohio.
Let’s start:
The Ohio Statehouse: If your wedding is in Downtown Columbus and the weather is not looking great, you can get a permit from The Ohio Statehouse and use inside the building for your photoshoot. It’s beautiful and unique inside; and you can also use this space for engagement photos, or really for any photo shoot during rainy days or cold winter months.
Columbus Metropolitan Library: I discovered the lighting in this place while I was taking photos of my son when I took him to see the Thomas train display during Christmas time. I was amazed by all the white marble and modern look of the building with plenty sunlight coming in. In fact, then we did Chel’s headshot photo session there last year, and I was right, gorgeous indoor place to shoot in- and it’s free! Plus, It’s connected to Topiary Park, so even if you schedule an indoor session in Columbus Main Library with me, but weather turns out to be ok (cause, why not in Ohio? :), we can always use outdoor as well.
Franklin Park Conservatory: I’ve done photo shoots outside, in the public gardens of Franklin Park Conservatory but never had thought of shooting inside until Tete asked me for it. I immediately called Franklin Park Conservatory and 2 years ago in February, we were sweating while shooting Tete&Tim’s engagement photos in the desert part of the conservatory:) And look at this scenery! They charge a photography fee so I always recommend checking their website before the shoot.
Hilton Easton and Hilton Downtown Columbus: You may have seen the Sky Bridge of Hilton Downtown that is above the high street in Short North. Well, while inside the bridge is every photographer’s dream space to shoot in, the common areas of Hilton Downtown is in fact amazingly well designed as well! I’ve shot couple bride&groom portraits inside the hotel because my couples were getting ready there, but I know that when you ask the hotel management in advance, they are pretty flexible with giving permission to photo shoots, especially during the week. You can see more of this wedding HERE on my blog.
Talking about Hilton Hotels, I recently shot an Engagement Party in Hilton at Easton Town Center on a VERY cold weekend and the interior design did not disappoint again! We stepped outside for a little to include the snow in the photos, but I really loved indoor photos here as well!
Breweries, Wineries, Coffee shops, Ice Cream shops and Pastries in and around Columbus: When I talk to my engaged couples about their engagement photos, I always ask them about their favorite things to do together, eat or drink! Some like coffee, some like beer, some like wine… And if it’s winter, indoor places like Breweries, Wineries, Coffee shops especially help as we can do part of the engagement session indoors, before heading out to cold for a little. Below, you can see that I did Erin&Alex’s engagement session in Rockmill brewery in Lancaster, and recently shot Jessica&Jay’s engagement session in PigSkin Brewery in Gahanna. They both loved beer so why not personalize their session while staying inside:)
And this sweet pie below! Guess where these photos are taken?! In a bakery:) When Adeline’s mom Rachel asked me for some 1 year old birthday photos, it was February and like I said, I don’t have a studio. But I immediately thought about this bakery that I’ve been before. I called them ahead, they loved the idea, and even helped us with a quick setup- aka moving a few chairs and table aside:) Adeline had a cupcake as a birthday cake, and we all had fun. One of my favorite session so far!
Rental Photography Studios in Columbus: (addition) For the 1st time in 2018, I wanted to offer indoor Christmas Session, because again-weather in Ohio! 🙂 After many reseacrh, I found Zurio Photo Studio&Event Space. I loved the white brick wall and organized my Christmas mini sessions there. This space has lots of natural light and would be perfect for any kind of photo session: 1 year old photo shoot, couples, boudoir… I would love to go there and shoot there a family, sibling or just children’s portraits. Let me know if you would be up for it:)
Nurseries: Before I finish with the last, easy to guess indoor location idea, I wanted to share this unique indoor space idea with you: a nursery! You would never think about it right? But we did Amanda’s senior session in Oakland Nurseries in New Albany 2 years ago, and I still love it! When you think about it, it’s hard to find this many flowers together if you shoot outdoor sometimes:)
Your home! : Yes the easiest, the coziest indoor photo session location is your own house. We call these in-home lifestyle sessions which is pretty self explanatory:)
